Gomukh Trek

Uttarkashi,Uttrakhand

The Gomukh Trek is a moderate yet soul-stirring trail through the Gangotri National Park in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. Starting from the ancient pilgrimage town of Gangotri, the path follows the banks of the Bhagirathi River through pine and birch forests, past the campsite of Chirbasa, ascending to the high-altitude meadow of Bhojbasa, and finally reaching Gomukh — the glacier's icy snout at 4,255 m. For the spiritually inclined, the trek holds enormous religious significance as Gomukh is considered the birthplace of the River Ganga.

Packing Essentials

1
Layered Clothing
Carry moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece mid-layer, a waterproof and windproof outer shell, and an insulated down jacket to stay comfortable in changing mountain weather.
2
Trekking Bottoms
Pack two pairs of quick-dry trekking pants, thermal leggings, warm woollen socks, gaiters, a sun hat, woollen beanie, neck gaiter or balaclava, and fleece-lined gloves.
3
Trekking Boots
Wear sturdy waterproof ankle-high trekking boots that are well broken in before the trek, and carry camp sandals or flip-flops for evenings.
4
Trekking Equipment
Bring adjustable trekking poles, microspikes or crampons for glacier sections, a 35–45 litre backpack with a rain cover, a sleeping bag rated to –10°C or below, a headlamp with extra batteries, and UV400 glacier sunglasses.
5
Health & Hygiene
Carry Diamox (after consulting your doctor), a personal first-aid kit, SPF 50+ sunscreen, SPF lip balm, hand sanitizer, biodegradable soap, ORS sachets, personal medications, and water purification tablets.
6
Documents
Keep a government-issued photo ID, trekking permit printouts, and emergency cash, as there are no ATMs beyond Uttarkashi.
7
Electronics
Carry offline maps on your phone, a high-capacity power bank, charging cables, and any essential electronic accessories.
8
Food & Personal Items
Pack high-energy snacks such as nuts, energy bars, dry fruits, and chocolates to maintain energy levels during the trek.

Safety Considerations

1
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
Ascend gradually, stay well hydrated, and monitor for symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Carry Diamox only after consulting your doctor, and descend immediately if symptoms of HACE or HAPE develop.
2
Glacier Safety
Never walk on the Gangotri Glacier without a licensed guide. Stay away from glacier edges, crevasses, icefalls, and the unstable ice wall at Gomukh.
3
Weather Awareness
Mountain weather changes rapidly. Night temperatures at Bhojbasa can drop to –10°C even in summer. Always carry warm layers, start trekking early, and avoid trekking during storms, heavy snowfall, or poor visibility.
4
Proper Acclimatization
Do not skip the acclimatization night at Gangotri. Follow the 'climb high, sleep low' principle, stay hydrated, eat nutritious meals, and avoid overexertion during the initial days.
5
River Crossing Safety
Cross the Bhagirathi River only via designated bridges. Never attempt to cross glacial streams or rivers during monsoon season or after heavy rainfall.
6
Communication & Emergency
Mobile network coverage is extremely limited beyond Chirbasa. Inform your accommodation or trek leader about your itinerary, carry emergency communication devices if possible, and note that ITBP assistance is available at Gangotri.
7
Wildlife Awareness
Gangotri National Park is home to snow leopards, brown bears, and other wildlife. Maintain a safe distance, store food securely, avoid trekking alone at night, and always stay on marked trails.
8
Environmental Responsibility
Carry all waste back with you, use designated toilet facilities, avoid campfires inside the national park, and do not disturb wildlife or pick alpine flowers. Follow Leave No Trace principles.

Heavy rainfall, landslides, slippery trails, and swollen rivers make trekking unsafe during the monsoon. This season is generally not recommended.
4
November – April (Winter Closure)
The trek remains closed due to heavy snowfall, sub-zero temperatures, and road closures. Trekking is not possible during this period.
