Panwali Kantha is a breathtaking high-altitude meadow trek nestled deep in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. Sitting at an elevation of approximately 3,585 metres (11,762 ft) above sea level, the trek winds through dense forests of deodar, oak, and rhododendron before opening up to spectacular rolling bugyals — the traditional alpine grasslands of the Garhwal Himalayas. What makes Panwali Kantha truly exceptional is the unobstructed, panoramic view of the entire Char Dham mountain corridor. On a clear day, trekkers can see the Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri ranges, along with towering peaks such as Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Kedar Dome, Kirti Stambh, Thalay Sagar, and Meru — an experience that very few treks in India offer. The standard route begins from Ghuttu village in Tehri Garhwal and concludes at Trijuginarayan or Sonprayag in Rudraprayag district, making it a convenient add-on to a Kedarnath yatra. The trek is graded easy to moderate, making it accessible to beginners with basic fitness while still rewarding experienced trekkers with stunning natural beauty and cultural immersion. Throughout the year, Panwali Kantha presents a different face. In spring (April–May), the bugyals blaze with crimson and pink rhododendron blooms. The post-monsoon season (September–October) brings crystal-clear skies, perfect for mountain photography. Winter (December–March) transforms the meadows into a white wonderland ideal for snow trekking and skiing.
